Queen of a To-Do List, No More!
This website has been years in the making for me and I finally got it out in 2026 because last year I started following a system from “The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results by Gary W. Keller and Jay Papasan”.
I have been raving about this book to anyone who will listen but I will say, it’s not for everyone. This book is for people who are ready to work on and achieve their goals in a systematic way, but in following the steps outlined in this book, you must look at yourself in the mirror honestly and self-reflect.
When it comes to achieving our big goals, we are our own worst enemy. Although it would be great and simple to blame everything outside of ourselves, and yes we are living in very difficult times and the legacy of trauma, oppression, white supremacy, colonialism and patriarchy is always at play, AND we can still make meaningful progress and strive toward our biggest goals that bring purpose and meaning to our lives. We have to look at ourselves though, and learn how to get out of our own way, and that is not an easy process.
I’m trying to figure out what to say about this book without regurgitating out the cliff notes, because it truly just deserves to be read (it’s a short read, but one you will return to multiple times).
Although there are so many gems in this book that have provided a system for how I now approach my life now, the first gem that caught my eye was the focusing question. The authors ask the reader:
“What’s the ONE Thing I can do such that by doing it everything else will be easier or unnecessary?”
This question rocked me because I am the queen of a to do list and there’s nothing I like more than checking items off the list. I noticed though that although I could spend a whole day checking things off my list I didn’t feel like I was moving my business forward and I would feel exhausted at the end of it all.
When I started to ask the focusing question, I gained more clarity to the insight that not all items on my list are equally important. I also realized that if I really drilled it down, there are things I can do that can forever shape the future of my business for the better and that those things deserve my focused attention, at 8:30am in the morning, every single day.
This website has been part of that process, because to me, controlling my digital footprint on my terms is of high priority. These social media accounts bring so much promise, opportunity and exposure to build and connect with the community and grow a business, however, they have real costs. I just simply cannot be on social media every day for my own mental health and the risk of depending on a platform you don’t control for all your audience engagement is bananas.
So friends, this website, in all its rudimentary glory, is a product of what I learned from the One Thing book, podcast and coaching program (did I mention I’m a devout follower now?) and the habit I created around writing and posting regularly (which is from another game changing book that I will write about in a future post) is a promise to myself to actively strive toward achieving my goals in a systematic and supported way.
Thanks for being witness to this journey and I will be sharing more of the lessons learned from The One Thing because I believe more people, especially new and aspiring yoga and fitness instructors and entrepreneurs, will benefit from the lessons of this book. It’s just THAT good.
